This week I got to make a very unique custom order as I was asked to inlay a gold wedding ring into a wooden ring! This tricky project was pretty advanced and it took a couple of attempts but the final ring was stunning.
The inside of the ring was made with Santos Rosewood and the outer wood was Grey Birdseye Maple. The central gold band was provided by my customer and I added two extra inlays of Dinosaur Bone and Tektite Meteorite.
I used the “bent wood method” to create the inside and grey portions of the ring – this gave it a lot of strength as well as an opportunity to show off the beautiful grain. To make the ring durable and protect it from the elements I used a C.A glue finish (known as superglue finish among wood turners).
Making the ring was pretty difficult but the unique tapered shape also made it difficult to polish. To polish a wooden ring like this I used a variety of extremely fine sand papers and a buffing compound to make it super shiny.
Enjoy the video and get in touch if you have any ideas for a custom ring of your own!
